Lacquerware
Lacquer is part of the artistic, cultural and socio-economic fabric of Myanmar, and Bagan in particular. Within families, skills have been passed down from generation to generation. Today's masters are producing pieces using traditional production techniques but with a contemporary design feel. These artisans are keeping the historic art of lacquer in Myanmar alive today.
Turquoise Mountain is working with Black Elephant Studio, established in 2000 by British-Ukranian artist Veronica Gritsenko, to produce a range of homeware items with these artisans. Designed and created in Bagan, each piece takes up to six months to make and is a delicate and unique work of art.
