Turquoise Mountain President Shoshana Stewart proudly championed the work of Syrian artisans living in Jordan, wearing the Sacred Pearl handbag as she attended the Coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May.
The design – inspired by the geometric pattern of an Afghan window – was brought to life by Syrian master artisans Moataz and Osama. The bag is hand-carved from walnut wood and inlaid with mother of pearl. This traditional craft has been found in the Islamic world as far back at the 9th century, with many of those still practising originally living in Damascus. Turquoise Mountain is committed to preserving this heritage craft by training the next generation of artisans through our apprentice programmes in the Levant.
The Sacred Pearl collection is a collaboration between Turquoise Mountain artisans and designer Mehera Blum of Blumera, through our partner Women Forward International, an organisation dedicated to unity, collaboration and service. Together, we share a vision to uplift artisans globally, specifically women in conflict zones.
