On December 8, 2016 the Turquoise Mountain Institute dedicated its 2016 Calligraphy Competition in honor of Mohammed Attar Herawi, one of Afghanistan’s most famous calligraphers. The competition took place in Herat, a center of Afghan culture and the birthplace of many renowned artists. Hoping to follow in Herawi’s footsteps, a number of talented young calligraphers participated in the one-day workshop and competition.
After a careful review by the Fine Arts Faculty of Herat University, the Behzad Fine Art Institute, the Kohandyar Cultural Foundation, and the Calligraphy Association, Turquoise Mountain is delighted to announce the winners of this year’s competition:
1 Nawid u Rahman Allam
2 Mohammad Noman Rahimi
3 Mahdi Hemat
The Calligraphy Exhibition formally opened on January 19, 2017. Hundreds of visitors, dignitaries from cultural institutions, representatives from the Ministry of Information and Culture and the Deans of Kabul and Herat University attended the event and awards ceremony.
The annual calligraphy competition plays a vital role in preserving Afghan cultural heritage and Turquoise Mountain is proud to support this important art form for many years to come.
