Visitors to the Family Pavilion this summer will be able to try their hand at woodworking, pottery and painting thanks to Turquoise Mountain, who will be bringing three of the top Afghan artisans to give interactive craft demonstrations over the late August Bank Holiday weekend.

Between the 25th and the 27th of August, children will be able to try their hand at carving under Naseer Mansouri’s instruction or watch as he works on a more intricate piece. Naseer is one of the world’s most esteemed wood-carvers from Afghanistan, and the geodesic dome in walnut wood and the cedar pavilion on display during the Summer Opening are the work of Naseer and the Turquoise Mountain woodworking team.

Abdul Matin Malekzada will also show visitors how to throw a bowl using his pottery wheel. With Turquoise Mountain, Abdul Matin created the installation of turquoise bowls which will be on display in the State Rooms, using traditional glazes and techniques which have almost completely died.

Samira Kitman, Afghanistan’s Female Entrepreneur of the Year in 2015, will offer painting demonstrations and will give children the chance to try small pieces of illustration or calligraphy. Samira is a fantastic example of how the Prince’s Turquoise Mountain has empowered women in Afghanistan and elsewhere to become entrepreneurs in the crafts sector.

Throughout the 10 weeks of the exhibition, visitors will also be able to explore Afghanistan through the Turquoise Mountain interactive map, on display on the 52-inch touch screen. Children will be able to see images of the Turquoise Mountain students at work and watch videos on the restoration of the historic area of Murad Khani.
