Artisans
Afghanistan’s unique crafts traditions are being revitalized through a new generation of enterprising craftsmen and women.
Afghan artisans carve fragrant Himalayan cedar and walnut wood, create their own natural pigments for miniature paints out of crushed lapis lazuli from Badakshan and shape local clay mined from the mountains of the Hindu Kush. They also collaborate with international designers to create jewellery in silver and gold studded with Afghan rubies from Jagdalak, emeralds from the Panjshir valley, and chrysocolla from Bamiyan.
Young artisans are mentored through their first years of business, given access to specialist equipment, workspace, and connected with international markets.
